Chester County Skating Club - Handbook

Welcome

Welcome to the Chester County Skating Club. The Club is a private, non-profit, organization designed to provide competitive and non-competitive skating activities for many ages in a pleasant informal environment.

Good behavior and good sportsmanship are emphasized under the guidance of the professional staff and volunteer coaches.

The Chester County Skating Club works in cooperation with the Upland Country Day School. The facilities are owned by Upland. The Club is operated and managed by a volunteer board of directors drawn from the membership of the Skating Club.

Operating Times

The Club opens the first week of October and continues through the last week of March. During the season, a weekly schedule of hockey practices, figure skating, open hockey and family skating times are posted in the clubhouse and on the website www.ccsccougars.com .

Every effort is made to maintain a consistent schedule throughout the season. However, there are times when the schedule must be changed. Members are encouraged to check the calendar in the clubhouse on a routine basis for schedule updates and check the club website. CCSC will occasionally have to close the rink due to snow. Call the rink after 1:00 pm or check the website.

Club Rules

  • For the safety of all, poor behavior is not tolerated.
  • Children below the age of 10 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult; there is no baby-sitting at the rink. The only exception to this rule is if the child is with an instructor for skating lessons or hockey practice. Parents should meet promptly at the end of the instructional session.
  • Children are not to be unattended outside of the rink building or in the parking lot.
  • No smoking inside or outside the rink building.
  • No intoxicating substances (alcohol, drugs, etc.) allowed on Club premises.
  • No food or drink allowed on the ice.
  • No littering.
  • No crack-the-whip, tag, or other skating in an unsafe manner.
  • No throwing, kicking or playing with any foreign objects on the ice.
  • Sitting on the boards and/or hanging on the glass is not permitted.
  • No one is allowed on the catwalk without permission from the rink manager. Permission may be granted for that one time only.
  • Rink management has the right to discipline and rescind skating privileges and/or impose fines for damage to the rink facility.

Family Skating

Family skating is a time when parents and children are encouraged to come and skate at the club. On Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and during holidays, specific hours for family skating are scheduled. The following rules apply to family skating:

  • Families may bring guests, and a person may be a guest once per month.
  • The guest fee is $5.00 per session.
  • Members must register their guests at the manager’s desk prior to entering the ice surface.
  • Members are responsible for their guests during family skating times.
  • Sticks and pucks are not permitted at family skate.

Learn to Skate

The Learn-to-Skate program is designed to instruct children, beginning at age five and older (good group skating habits are stressed). Learn-to-Skate is held on Sundays during Family Skate time. A section of the ice is reserved for the Learn-to-Skate program. Learn-to-Skate students do not participate during week-night figure skating sessions.

All students must wear helmets during their lessons, and warm gloves or mittens are also welcome additions. Continued attendance at Learn-to-Skate is encouraged, culminating with a group number in the end-of-season Ice Review. Our professional figure skaters donate their time and energy to give your child the best beginners’ skating experience available.

Figure Skating

Individual and small group lessons for all ages--male and female--are available from several professional instructors. Lessons can be scheduled by contacting the instructors directly.

Figure skating sessions (as indicated on the rink schedule) are not just for lessons, however figure skates must be worn during all figure skating times. No one, other than instructors, his or her students, and figure skaters are allowed on the ice during figure skating times. Learn-to-skate students should not attend these figure skating sessions, but practice their skills during family skate times.

Baggy clothing is not recommended for figure skating. Figure skates should provide adequate support for the ankle. Check with a figure skating pro regarding skate selection before making a purchase. It is recommended that figure skates be sharpened at a facility with expertise in sharpening figure skates, such as the Skating Club of Wilmington or the University of Delaware.

Ice Review

The Annual Ice Review is the highlight of the figure skating season. Children and adults work together to present a skating extravaganza. From the graceful solos of the experienced skaters, to the wobbles and falls of the beginners, the Ice Review highlights everyone’s hard work. All Club members are encouraged to attend this family event. It is a wonderful end to the season.

Services

Skate sharpening is available at the rink. Unlimited skate sharpening plans are available for families and individuals. Sign up with rink management for sharpening plans. A Snack Bar is available for light food and beverages during weekends and some week-nights.

Phone Policy

The club phone is for official use only.
